RENO, NV (KOLO) Step into the living room of the Gorton family's Golden Valley home and there's little doubt about its purpose or what's going on here. It is clearly a classroom and school is in session.
"We wanted to give them a space that felt the fun aspects of school," says mom Rebecca Gorton. "You go into the classroom and you see the front board. You get to see your achievements on the wall."
And so surrounded by sort of environment you'd expect. A globe, maps, text books, posters and boards, even individual lockers, the Gorton girls, fourteen year old Larissa, 13 year old Leila and eleven year old Liv are hard at their laptops winding up another day in class--on line.
They've been students in the virtual charter school Nevada Connections Academy now for five years.
Families like theirs chose this unconventional approach for a variety of reasons. Some didn't do well in neighborhood schools because they were bullied, or they had special needs.
Rebecca Gorton and her husband made their decision based on their own childhood experiences, but also worried about crowded classrooms and, perhaps most important, a schedule that--with homework in the evening--left little time together as a family.
"Because we literally only have so many hundred days with your kids and then it's gone."
Rebecca's husband has a job which includes frequent travel, time away from home. An on line school allowed them to take their classroom with them.
"To travel each kid has their own crate. We just put in the laptop, whatever books they need and some earphones and that's it."
That leads to experiences others might envy.
"Two years ago I got to travel to 22 states in 27 days because of the flexibility of the school," says Larissa. "It was very fun and I got to learn through my school and my experiences."
And, apparently, their education hasn't suffered. Working at their own pace, they're doing well.
But it's all coming to an end. Friday, the state's Public Charter School Authority board decided to pull the school's certification because it was failing to meet graduation rate goals.
That means this will apparently be the last year for Nevada Connections and the Gortons--like the families of three thousand other students will be once again facing a decision--neighborhood school or some alternative.
"The big part is what's going to be good for my family. What's going to help them continue to thrive and where are they going to do their best."
