The man stabbed to death at a Popeyes in Maryland was cutting a line to get the chain’s popular chicken sandwich when he sparked the fatal confrontation, police said Tuesday.
Kevin Tyrell Davis, 28, had spent about 15 minutes “methodically” bypassing customers in a line just for the sandwich Monday, Prince George’s County Police Chief Hank Stawinski told reporters.
An unidentified man waiting in the special queue challenged Davis and the argument spilled outside the restaurant, which was just outside Washington D.C.
Davis was stabbed once in the upper body, police said. Cops found him in the parking lot when they arrived and he died at a nearby hospital less than an hour later.
Police released surveillance photo of their suspect, and of a woman who was with him at the time of the incident. The pair were accompanied by two children.
The attacker, wearing a backward baseball cap, yellow shirt and black jacket, fled in a car.
There’s no indication Davis knew the suspect prior to the confrontation, cops said.
Popeyes resumed selling its chicken sandwich Sunday. It was originally introduced in August, attracting “hangry” mobs, and became so popular that it sold out that month, the chain said.
About three dozen people, including several children, were in the eatery at the time of the confrontation.
“People are asking, ‘How can something so pointless occur?'” Stawinski said. “How does a confrontation lead to a homicide in 15 seconds?”
