World’s Largest Starbucks Opens in Chicago With 1000 People in Line - Eater Chicago

The pre-opening hype of the world’s largest Starbucks reached its apex on Friday morning as more than 1,000 people waited in freezing temperatures to be the first paying customers inside the massive new Reserve Roastery on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile. Some superfans traveled from around the country and others began waiting outside the white downtown building as early as 4:30 a.m., reps say, to get inside the five-floor coffee theme park at its scheduled 9 a.m. public unveiling.

The line stretched for more than three blocks, beginning at the roastery’s Michigan Avenue entrance and continuing around Erie and Rush streets, for most of the morning. General manager Shauna McKenzie Lee opened its doors at 8:55 a.m. to loud and triumphant cheers from the masses outside as news cameras rolled. Lee, Italian chef and frequent collaborator Rocco Princi, CEO Kevin Johnson, and more clapping Starbucks luminaries greeted the chilly fans, some of whom were dressed in green clothing and one who dyed her hair green as a tribute to the chain’s branding, upon entering the monument to the world’s largest coffee chain.

“We’ve been waiting for this moment and we’re very excited to be here in Chicago,” Lee said. “This is epic.”

The massive 35,000-square-foot space reached its 1,000-person capacity just 20 minutes after opening, an employee working the door said, leaving hundreds more to continue to wait in line while others joined the queue. The first thousand who made it inside celebrated with cheering, wide-eyed wonder, selfie sticks, and plenty of coffee, of course.

The world’s largest Starbucks takes over the longtime Crate & Barrel store inside one of downtown Chicago’s most interesting buildings. A cocktail bar with Chicago-exclusive drinks, barrel-aged coffee, Princi’s savory and sweet Italian food, a seasonal rooftop patio, liquid nitrogen gelato, a 56-foot tall cask that distributes beans, the Midwest’s first curved escalator, and its ability to roast 200,000 pounds of coffee annually are among the reasons so many fans have been eagerly awaiting its unveiling.

McDonald’s, and Lululemon are examples of a national chains that have made splashes in Chicago with flagship restaurants. Now the wait is over for Starbucks’ superfans, coffee enthusiasts in Chicago, and the company. The world’s largest Starbucks is now open.

Starbucks Reserve Roastery Chicago, 646 N. Michigan Avenue, Open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 12 a.m. on Friday, 8 a.m. to 12 a.m. on Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday.
