Sounder north and south lines delayed after two pedestrians hit by trains in separate incidents - Seattle Times

Two people were hit by Sound Transit trains — one fatally near Sumner in Pierce County and another near Carkeek Park in Seattle — during the Tuesday morning commute, causing hours-long delays for passengers, especially those from the South End.

The first pedestrian was struck south of Sumner Station around 5:30 a.m. by Train 1502, which leaves Lakewood for Seattle at 5:01 a.m., according to Sound Transit. Because it was a fatality, the trains were shut down until the medical examiner could investigate.

Train 1502 was moving again by 8:30 a.m., but delays remained for the seven or so trains from Lakewood and Tacoma that were backed up behind it, according to Sound Transit. Spokesman Scott Thompson said the agency hoped to have things back on schedule by mid-morning.

Another pedestrian was struck by a second train, this one coming from Everett, near Carkeek Park in the Ballard area around 8 a.m. Thompson said the person involved was not fatally injured and the train was reported to be moving again before 9 a.m.

Thompson said he did not immediately have any more information about the victims or what happened.

Buses were sent to Puyallup to take passengers to Federal Way, where they could then board buses to Seattle.

By 8:30 a.m., some of the south line trains were moving, and Sound Transit said it was hoping to be back on schedule by the time the 10:16 a.m. train from Lakewood departs.

Meanwhile, on northbound Interstate 5, a crash caused traffic to back up about 6 miles before 7 a.m. between South 188th Street (before Southcenter mall) and South 272nd Street in Federal Way. The crash was cleared to the right shoulder around 8:30 a.m. and traffic began flowing again.
