The Chiefs will try to carry over the momentum from their rousing comeback when Kansas City hosts the Tennessee Titans in the 2020 AFC Championship Game on Sunday. The Chiefs rallied from 24 points down in the first quarter to pull off a 51-31 victory against the Texans in the divisional round. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes rallied the team on the sideline after special-teams miscues put Kansas City in a hole, then threw five touchdown passes as the Chiefs scored 41 consecutive points.
The Chiefs became the first team to win a playoff game by at least 20 points after trailing by at least 20. Kickoff is set for 3:05 p.m. ET at Arrowhead Stadium. Kansas City is a seven-point favorite in the latest Titans vs. Chiefs odds, while the over-under for total points scored is 53 after opening at 51. Before making any Chiefs vs. Titans picks, check out the NFL predictions from SportsLine expert Mike Tierney.
A veteran sportswriter, whose work has appeared in The New York Times and Los Angeles Times, Tierney has covered football of all levels for decades. He has been SportsLine's most profitable NFL handicapper this season, posting a record of 62-35 in his last 97 NFL picks, returning $2,351 to $100 players. Tierney also has had a sharp eye for the trajectories of these clubs, posting a stunning record of 22-11 on his last 33 spread picks involving the Titans or Chiefs.
In the wild-card round of the 2020 NFL Playoffs, Tierney told SportsLine members that the defending champion New England Patriots' elite defense would have trouble with Titans running back Derrick Henry. And it certainly did, as the workhorse ran for 182 yards as Tennessee (+4.5) pulled off the 20-13 upset. Anyone who has followed Tierney is way up.
Now, he has locked in on Titans vs. Chiefs from every angle and released another confident point-spread selection. You can go to SportsLine to see it. Here are several NFL lines for Chiefs vs. Titans in the AFC Championship Game 2020:
- Titans vs. Chiefs spread: Kansas City -7
- Titans vs. Chiefs over-under: 53 points
- Titans vs. Chiefs money line: Kansas City -337, Tennessee +271
- TEN: RB Derrick Henry has rushed for 1,273 yards in his last eight games.
- KC: QB Patrick Mahomes has topped 250 passing yards 11 times in his 14 full games.
Why the Chiefs can cover
The Chiefs have covered the spread in their last five games after accumulating more than 350 total yards in their previous game. They put up 434 yards in last week's comeback, and tight end Travis Kelce and running back Damien Williams each scored three touchdowns. Kelce is Mahomes' go-to guy, and the All-Pro tight end had 134 receiving yards on 10 catches against the Texans after posting 97 receptions for 1,229 yards and five TDs during the regular season.
Kansas City is 9-4-1 against the spread as a favorite, and the secondary sets the tone on defense. Safeties Tyrann Mathieu and Daniel Sorensen and corners Bashaud Breeland and Charvarius Ward can all make plays. Mathieu had four interceptions in the regular season, and the other three had two apiece. Frank Clark had eight sacks, and he added three more against the Texans. Chris Jones (calf), who led the team with nine sacks, is officially questionable.
Why the Titans can cover
Even so, Kansas City isn't a lock to cover the Titans vs. Chiefs spread in the AFC Championship Game 2020. The road team is 8-2 against the spread in the last 10 meetings between these teams and Henry has averaged 6.1 yards per carry the past three games. Tannehill has thrown for just 160 yards total, but has three touchdown passes in the playoffs after completing 70.3 percent of his passes in the regular season. He has a star receiver in A.J. Brown, who averaged 20.2 yards per catch and scored eight TDs in the regular season.
Tennessee has covered the spread in its past five road games and the secondary is the strength of the defense. Cornerback Logan Ryan and safeties Kenny Vaccaro and Kevin Byard are among the top tacklers and combined for 10 interceptions in the regular season. They each have one in the playoffs, and Ryan and Byard have combined for 36 tackles in the two games. Linebacker Rashaan Evans posted 111 tackles in the regular season and has 16 in the postseason. Tackle Jurrell Casey, who had five sacks in the regular season, had two against the Ravens.
How to make Titans vs. Chiefs picks
We can tell you Tierney is leaning under on the total, but he also says a critical x-factor makes one side of the spread a must-back. He's sharing what it is, and which side to back, only at SportsLine.
