750 homes affected by damage to gas line; crews going door to door - WSB Atlanta

ALPHARETTA, Ga. - Approximately 750 homes in Alpharetta went without gas service Friday night after a gas line was damaged by a construction crew on Rucker Road, authorities said.

Atlanta Gas Light crews are working to repair the line, the Alpharetta Department of Public Safety said in a Facebook post. The area affected runs through Mayfield Road and its adjacent neighborhoods and subdivisions.

“Of all nights to have no heat, this is like the coldest night of the year,” said neighbor Candace Brown.

Brown told Channel 2’s Christian Jennings that she dressed her children in the warmest clothes she could find before tucking them into bed Friday night.

“It’s tough with small children. We have 4 1/2-year-old twin boys, so putting them to bed tonight looked a little different. There was no bath 'cause we have no hot water,” Brown said.

Once the gas has been restored, crews will be going door to door to turn the gas back on, the release said. Residents are advised to not try to do that themselves.

“I know it was unexpected, but hopefully some urgency to get it put back on. We would really appreciate it,” Brown said.

Service is expected to be restored late Friday night and crews will begin visiting houses afterward, Atlanta Gas Light said.

If crews can’t make it to all homes that were affected by 11 p.m. Friday, they’ll resume restoring service at 7 a.m. Saturday.
