Notre Dame vs. Virginia Tech odds, line: 2019 college football picks, top predictions from expert on 13-5 run - CBS Sports

The Virginia Tech Hokies seek their fourth consecutive victory when they travel to face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Saturday. Kickoff for the nationally-televised contest is set for 2:30 p.m. ET from Notre Dame Stadium. The Hokies (5-2) were uneven in losing two of their first four, but have looked much improved over the past month. They come in well-rested off a bye following a win over North Carolina. The Irish (5-2) saw their College Football Playoff hopes squashed in a 45-14 loss at Michigan last week. But they can still reach a New Year's Day bowl game by winning their remaining five contests, and are undefeated at home this season. The Irish are 17.5-point favorites and the over-under for total points scored is 58 in the latest Notre Dame vs. Virginia Tech odds. Before finalizing your Notre Dame vs. Virginia Tech picks, check out the college football predictions from Josh Nagel.

A Nevada-based handicapper with more than 20 years of experience in the sports wagering industry, Nagel specializes in collegiate athletics and was SportsLine's top college football analyst last year. He is in the midst of another strong season for SportsLine members and heads into this week on a 10-4 run with his selections. What's more, he has had a sharp eye for the trajectory of these programs, posting a record of 13-5 on against the spread picks involving the Hokies or Irish over the past two seasons.

In Week 5, Nagel told SportsLine members that Virginia Tech (+14) was seriously undervalued as a two-touchdown underdog at Miami. The Hokies dominated from the outset and held on for a 42-35 outright victory, giving Nagel's followers another easy winner. Those who have consistently followed him are way up.

Now, Nagel has zeroed in on Notre Dame vs. Virginia Tech from every angle and released another confident against the spread pick that he's only sharing over at SportsLine.

Nagel knows many Notre Dame followers were calling for a change at quarterback after Ian Book had perhaps his worst career start against Michigan. He went just 8 for 25 for 73 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. But coach Brian Kelly was quick to dispel any controversy and announced he would be sticking with Book, who has completed 59.2 percent of his throws for 1,492 yards and 15 touchdowns against two picks.

Book has the potential for a breakout game against a Virginia Tech defense that has improved against the run but is still vulnerable against efficient passing attacks. The Hokies have allowed 368 passing yards per contest during their three-game win streak. Book went 25 of 35 for 271 yards and two touchdowns in a 45-23 win over Virginia Tech last season.

Even so, there's no guarantee the Irish will cover the Notre Dame vs. Virginia Tech spread against a team that appears to be hitting its peak.

The Hokies stumbled to a 2-2 start marked by struggles against inferior opponents and a 45-10 home loss to Duke. But the emergence of dual-threat sophomore quarterback Hendon Hooker along with an improved defense have sparked the three-game win streak in which they are averaging nearly 40 points per contest.

Hooker, who stepped in for injured opening-day starter Ryan Willis, has thrown for 580 yards and seven touchdowns against zero interceptions. He also has rushed for 156 yards and a score. Willis is healthy now, and both quarterbacks are expected to see time Saturday. The senior saw some action against North Carolina and completed all three of his passes for 55 yards and a touchdown in the 43-41, six-overtime victory.

Nagel has broken down this matchup and identified the critical factor that has him all over one side of the spread. He's only sharing what it is, and who to back, at SportsLine.
