USC vs. Arizona St. prediction, line: Sun Devils will cover - New York Post

In the biggest game of Clay Helton’s career, at least in terms of his future employment, the Southern California coach took a 32-point beating from Oregon last week. So the end is near for Helton, and it might be the beginning for Urban Meyer at USC.

After the Ducks turned Helton into a lame duck, the Trojans travel to Arizona State on Saturday for another Pac-12 test. William Hill sportsbooks opened USC as a 1½-point favorite. Sharp money flipped the line, but now it’s back at USC -1 at William Hill, as ASU freshman QB is questionable with a leg injury and will be a game-time decision.

USC freshman quarterback Kedon Slovis is coming off his worst game (three interceptions and a lost fumble), and Helton’s strategic blunders contributed to the 56-24 loss to Oregon that seems likely to deflate the Trojans emotionally.

When he coached the Jets, Herm Edwards said he always played to win the game, and after a bye, Edwards is in a good spot to do that. The Sun Devils started 5-1, but have lost their past two and are suddenly fighting for bowl eligibility.

Some line value is lost, but Arizona State should be the right side, with Edwards having a much better shot to motivate his team than Helton does this week.

The pick: Arizona State +1.

Louisville (+6½) over MIAMI: The Hurricanes upset Florida State last week and ended Willie Taggart’s coaching stop in Tallahassee. A letdown after a rivalry game is always a possibility, and Miami coach Manny Diaz is 1-4 ATS as a favorite versus FBS opponents in 2019. The Cardinals are 3-1 straight up in their past four, with the loss to Clemson. Louisville coach Scott Satterfield, whose team is coming off a bye, is 18-6-1 ATS in his past 25 dating to his time at Appalachian State.

Purdue-NORTHWESTERN (Under 39): This could be the worst game of the day. The forecast in Evanston, Ill., calls for the potential of inclement weather and the certainty of incompetent quarterback play. The Wildcats have scored more than 15 points just once this season and were outscored 106-6 in their past three losses. The Boilermakers are down to their third-string QB.

Kansas State (+7) over TEXAS: The Wildcats take a three-game win streak to Austin, where Longhorns coach Tom Herman is 2-5 ATS in his past seven. Kansas State ranks No. 24 in the nation in rushing offense (217.3 yards per game), and an injury-riddled Texas defense is not stopping the run or the pass.

Last week: 1-3
Season: 12-18-2.
