What is on the line for Jets vs. playoff-contending Raiders - New York Post

The Jets have a chance Sunday to prove whether their two-game winning streak has been a product of them truly improving or just playing some teams worse than them.

The 6-4 Raiders come to MetLife Stadium riding their own winning streak of three games and very much in the thick of the AFC playoff chase. This game can be a true barometer for the 3-7 Jets on whether their recent success is just because of playing the dismal Giants and Redskins.

“Obviously we have a legit test this week, this is a good offense coming in here this week,” coach Adam Gase said. “We’ll really find out where we’re at right now, we’ll find out where we are not only as a defense, but an offense and special teams, of how well we can compete with this group.”

Not much was expected of Jon Gruden’s Raiders this season, but they are fighting for a playoff spot. The Jets can hope that the Raiders are looking ahead to their showdown with the Chiefs next week or flying East and playing at 10 a.m. Pacific time takes some life out of them.

The Jets are not in any playoff hunt, but a win against the Raiders would not just legitimize what they have done the last two weeks, it also sets them up to have a decent winning streak.

The Jets have not won three in a row since 2017. If they win this game, they face the winless Bengals and the two-win Dolphins the next two weeks, opening the possibility for the first five-game winning streak the team has had since 2015.

“We’ve been getting a little momentum going. We’ve got two in a row,” running back Le’Veon Bell said. “The Raiders are a good team. They’re real good up front. Jon Gruden’s a great coach. He’s going to find ways to put his players in position to make plays. This is definitely a big one that we’ve got to make sure we go out and grab.”

Though the competition has been questionable, the Jets have given their fans reason to hope recently. Quarterback Sam Darnold looks more comfortable in Gase’s offense. The offensive line seems to have stabilized. The defense has been stout against the run.

“We’re gaining confidence,” safety Jamal Adams said. “We’re understanding how to play with each other, situational football and feeding off one another, offense, defense, special teams. I think we’re doing a good job lately. We’ve just got to keep it up.”
