The Pittsburgh Panthers finished at the bottom of the ACC last season, but the team looks to be heading back in the right direction as they tip off the 2019-20 season against ACC foe Florida State.
The Panthers return a backcourt made up of sophomores — Xavier Johnson, Au’Diese Toney, and Trey McGowens. This trio combined for over 34.5 points per game last season and will get a boost down low with UNC Greensboro graduate transfer Eric Hamilton entering the fold.
Florida State, meanwhile, loses much of its production from a season ago, returning just two players who scored at least 4.5 points per game. In recent years the Seminoles have thrived on having teams that can go 10 players deep, and in some cases even more, and that appears to be an uncertainty entering the season.
Both Pittsburgh and Florida State also lack 3-point shooting. For Florida State, Devin Vassall is the lone returning player who made more than 33 percent of his 3s last year, while Johnson is the only one who fits that bill for Pittsburgh.
When Florida State made its road trip to Pittsburgh last season, the Panthers won the game outright by 13 points as 4¹/₂ -point underdogs. A team that is a year older should be able to protect its home court again.
